Workshop 1: KNOW YOUR CAMERA
Understand your camera. Take control of your photographs.

Your camera can do far more than you might realise. The trick is understanding how to make it work for you. This workshop breaks down the fundamentals of photography and shows you how to apply them to photographing dogs.
We'll look at what makes a good dog portrait, why different photographic styles require different approaches, and how to get the best results from the equipment you already own.
What we'll cover
-
Your camera explained: Understand the capabilities and limitations of different cameras, including phones, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
-
What makes a great dog portrait? Explore different styles of dog photography, from natural outdoor portraits to action shots, and learn how they're achieved.
-
The holy trinity of exposure: Understand aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how they work together, and how to control them.
-
Camera settings that work: Learn some starting-point settings for different styles of dog photography.
-
Make your camera work for you: Look at how to set up your own camera to achieve the results you want.
Although this will be predominantly a classroom-type workshop, this isn't about memorising complicated settings or buying expensive equipment.
It's about understanding the principles and learning how to apply them with the equipment you already have.
You'll also receive an optional 30-minute follow-up video call
or one-to-one session to review and critique your work after the workshop.
Location: Chesterfield S41 0QQ

Workshop 2: KNOW YOUR DOG
Because photographing dogs is about far more than photography.

You can have the best camera in the world, but it won't help if you don't understand the dog in front of you.
Dogs aren't little humans in furry coats. They have their own ways of communicating, their own personalities, their own fears and motivations, and their own ideas about what should happen next.
Learning to recognise and respond to those differences can transform the way you photograph them.
This workshop draws on real-world experience photographing more than 1,000 dogs, helping you understand what dogs are telling you, adapt your approach, and work more effectively with different temperaments.
What we'll cover
-
Think like a dog photographer: Understand why photographing dogs presents unique challenges and why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work.
-
Read the dog in front of you: Explore different temperaments and behaviours, from overexcited and hyperactive dogs to timid, cautious or easily distracted dogs.
-
Manage risk on location: Understand the practical considerations around leads, harnesses, public spaces and the safety of dogs and people.
-
Work with different behaviours: Learn practical approaches for different dogs, why they behave as they do, and how patience and confidence influence your results.
-
Get natural poses: Discover why forcing a dog into position isn't always the answer, and how to work with natural stances, treats, tricks and favourite toys.
-
Know when to stop: Recognise when a dog needs a break and understand why their welfare must come before getting the shot.
Again, mainly classroom-type learning, but we'll also have a practical session at a nearby outdoor location (weather permitting), demonstrating how these principles work in practice.
This is real-world dog photography experience, shared openly and practically. Lessons drawn from working with over 1,000 dogs with different personalities, behaviours and needs.
Location: Chesterfield S41 0QQ
Dates: 30th January 2027 or 20th February 2027
Price: £85
Please Note:
For this workshop it will be assumed you have completed Workshop 1 or are fairly competent with your camera and understand basic camera settings. If unsure, speak with Joe beforehand.

WHO'S TEACHING YOU?
Joe Riley
These workshops are led by Joe of Bounders Dog Photography, bringing together over 20 years of photographic experience, teaching and a specialist focus on dogs.
JOE HASN'T ALWAYS PHOTOGRAPHED DOGS...

KNOWLEDGEABLE - In a highly varied and concentrated career spanning over 20 years, there is little Joe hasn't photographed. Fast-moving superbikes, football at Wembley, celebrities and royals, High-end advertising and studio work, even the dreaded school portraits and a best friend's wedding. His knowledge and experience is certainly extensive.
DOWN TO EARTH - Throughout that time he has taught night classes, college kids and led workshops for photographers of all abilities, with his specialism being small off-camera flash. He is well studied in everything photographic, with a BA Hons degree from the Cambridge School of Art, and NCTJ & NCE press qualifications. He teaches with a passion and a down to earth style that inspires, without getting bogged down with 'photo gear' speak or anything over technical.
DOG LOVER - And as for his knowledge of pooches? Well, he's only spent the last decade focusing solely on dogs, working with over 1,000 of them of all shapes and sizes...and you've seen the results.
So I guess what we're saying is, you'll be in safe hands...
